These unusual bud vases have been made from the deck wood of the SS Great Britain. The wood, removed during conservation work, formed the top deck of the ship from the 1990s until 2023.
Each vase is made by hand from recycled wood, so each one has its own features and quirks. Some of the vases have glass interiors, meaning they can hold water and live flowers. The vases without glass are perfect for displaying dried flowers. Please specify in order notes which type of vase you would like to order, if one is preferred.
South Gloucestershire-based woodturner and carver Johannes Roux has a lifelong fascination with maritime history, so for him to work with wood from the ship's deck is a match made in heaven! Drawn to contrasts in texture, form and colour, he creates contemporary pieces that echo ancient design traditions.
For this range, Johannes has designed stunning household objects that preserve the original time-worn surface of the deck while revealing and celebrating the rich colour and grain of the underlying Jarrah wood.
