Between 1852 and 1875, Brunel’s SS Great Britain carried hundreds of passengers across the world to Australia – many hoping to start new lives. Today, hundreds of thousands of Australians are descended from emigrants who arrived on the SS Great Britain.
This picture was painted in 1852 by John Wilson and shows the SS Great Britain approaching Table Bay in Cape Town, South Africa. The ship would stop off here en route to Australia, allowing both the ship to be refuelled and the passengers to explore!
