This beautiful antique map, republished and laid onto cloth, makes a striking and fascinating addition to any home. Originally maps like these would have provided a simple, reliable way to navigate the ocean. A line drawn between two points on the map would provide the exact angle to follow on a compass.
The map uses Mercator's projection and was originally made in 1861. At this time the interior of Africa was mostly unknown to European map makers, as were the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Similarly the Australian interior was uncharted.
