This antique map of the Australian Colonies and New Zealand was first published in 1854 by Gall & Inglis of Edinburgh. This was just under 80 years since the First Fleet arrived in Australia and established the first settlement of a penal colony. By this time, very little still was known of the Australian interior.
The colonies shown are New South Wales, Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania), South Australia, Australia Felix (Victoria) and New Zealand. Australia Felix meant fortunate or happy Australia, so named by Thomas Mitchell.
