This book, written by local community researcher, Shani Whyte, highlights people of colour who either worked or travelled on board the SS Great Britain.

Produced by the SS Great Britain Trust in collaboration with the Bridging Gaps Community Group, Tying the Tides is the result of a six-month long research project. The aim of the project is to bring more diversity to museums, and Shani's work has culminated in this concise yet fascinating book.

Shani Whyte was born in Bristol in 1979. She grew up in St Paul's and later moved to Newtown with her parents Beverley Campbell and Basil Greaves, who are both of Jamaican descent. She attended St Michael's on the Mount Primary School and Cotham Grammar School.

After working in the travel industry for 15 years Shani went back to school and studied a barbering diploma. She has a passion for writing poetry, aiming to help people with their mental health. A mother to three children, Adrienne-chai, Ty-la and Billie-Rae, she loves partaking in parent groups and community projects.
